Tax Ombud Urges Nigerians to Challenge Unfair Taxes
The Tax Ombud has encouraged Nigerians and business owners to challenge unfair tax assessments and multiple taxation through appropriate channels rather than silently bearing the burden of excessive tax demands.

Speaking at a media engagement in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Tax Ombud, Dr. John Nwabueze, emphasized the importance of protecting taxpayers' rights and ensuring fairness in the country's tax administration system. He noted that the Office of the Tax Ombud was established to serve as an independent body that helps taxpayers resolve disputes with revenue authorities through mediation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

According to Nwabueze, taxpayers who believe they have been unfairly assessed or subjected to multiple taxation can seek assistance from the office without necessarily resorting to lengthy and costly litigation. He explained that the institution aims to bridge the gap between taxpayers and revenue agencies by promoting transparency, accountability, and equitable treatment.

The Tax Ombud further stated that the office is committed to addressing complaints relating to tax assessments, tax collection practices, and other disputes involving revenue-generating agencies. He added that the office has already begun receiving and reviewing complaints from individuals and businesses across the country.

Nwabueze stressed that while taxpayers have a responsibility to fulfill their tax obligations, they also have the right to fair treatment under the law. He urged Nigerians to become more aware of their rights and utilize the available mechanisms for resolving tax-related grievances.

He also called on the media and relevant stakeholders to help create awareness about the Office of the Tax Ombud and its role in fostering a taxpayer-friendly environment.

The establishment of the Office of the Tax Ombud forms part of broader reforms aimed at improving tax administration, encouraging voluntary compliance, and building public confidence in Nigeria's tax system. The initiative is expected to contribute to a more transparent and efficient revenue collection framework while safeguarding the interests of taxpayers. :::
