KRA to Link Real-Time Tax Systems to M-Pesa for Easier Compliance
By Victor Amadala
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to revolutionize tax administration by integrating real-time tax systems with mobile money platforms such as M-Pesa. At the heart of this transformation is an enhanced electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS), designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and compliance.
Under the new system, business transactions will be captured instantly at the point of sale. The upgraded eTIMS will automatically generate electronic invoices and issue a Payment Registration Number (PRN) whenever a transaction is completed via mobile money. This development enables taxes to be calculated and settled in real time, eliminating delays associated with traditional filing systems.
KRA’s integration with M-Pesa is expected to significantly reduce tax evasion by providing the authority with end-to-end visibility of business transactions. By linking payments directly to tax reporting systems, the authority will be able to monitor sales data as they occur, minimizing opportunities for under-reporting and enhancing revenue collection.
In addition, the system will introduce pre-filled tax returns, allowing taxpayers to access automatically generated reports based on their transaction history. This feature is expected to reduce administrative burdens, minimize errors, and simplify compliance for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises.
The initiative also incorporates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and data analytics. Through tools like taxpayer profiling and risk assessment engines, KRA aims to shift from reactive enforcement to predictive compliance identifying discrepancies early and addressing them promptly.
Analysts say the move represents a major step toward a fully digital tax ecosystem in Africa. By leveraging widely used mobile money platforms, the system is expected to bring more informal sector players into the tax net while making compliance easier for legitimate businesses.
As governments across the continent explore digital solutions to improve tax collection, KRA’s real-time integration with M-Pesa positions Kenya as a leader in modern tax administration.
