No New Tax on Vehicles – NRS Debunks Viral Claim
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles, describing the claim as false and misleading.

The clarification came after a viral infographic circulated online, alleging that vehicle owners across the country would be required to begin paying a new levy from July 1, 2026. The message quickly gained attention on social media, creating uncertainty among motorists and transport operators.

In response, the NRS stated that no such tax has been approved or announced by the Federal Government. The agency explained that the circulating notice did not originate from any official source and was designed to mislead members of the public.

According to the Service, the fake publication improperly used government branding, including the Federal Government logo, in an attempt to appear authentic. It also reportedly directed citizens to an unofficial website that has no connection to the NRS or any recognised government institution.

The agency urged Nigerians to disregard the message and avoid making payments or sharing personal information through suspicious online platforms. Citizens were also encouraged to verify tax-related announcements only through official government communication channels.

The NRS reiterated its commitment to transparency and public awareness, warning that false information can create panic and expose people to fraud.

For now, motorists and vehicle owners can be assured that no new vehicle tax has been introduced in Nigeria, and any future policy changes would be communicated formally through legitimate government outlets.
