According to the JRB, there will be no restrictions on bank accounts or financial transactions from 1 January 2026 due to the non-availability of Tax IDs. The Board also clarified that no deductions will be made from any bank account solely because an individual or business does not yet have a Tax ID.
The JRB further assured Nigerians that Tax IDs will be automatically generated:
For individuals, using their National Identification Number (NIN).
For businesses, using their CAC registration number.
The Board emphasized that there is no cause for panic, as systems are being put in place to ensure a smooth and seamless retrieval of Tax IDs.
For Individuals
There will be no freezing, restriction, or limitation on your bank account because you do not yet have a Tax ID. The government or tax authorities will not deduct money from your account just because you don’t have a Tax ID. You do not need to apply manually. Your Tax ID will be automatically issued using your NIN (National Identification Number). Even from 1 January 2026, lack of a Tax ID will not stop you from carrying out normal banking transactions.
Business accounts remain unrestricted
Companies and SMEs will not have their accounts restricted for not having a Tax ID. No deductions from business accounts.
Funds will not be debited from company accounts simply because a Tax ID has not yet been issued. Tax IDs will be generated automatically using the company’s CAC registration number.
The policy is designed to improve tax administration and data harmonization, not to penalize compliant or transitioning businesses.
The JRB is reassuring Nigerians that the Tax ID initiative is administrative, not punitive. Banking activities will continue normally.
The government is still putting systems in place to ensure a smooth rollout.
The statement was issued by the Corporate Communications Department of the Joint Revenue Board and dated 12 December 2025.
