Afriland Towers: FIRS offers automatic jobs, scholarships to victims’ children

On September 25, 2025, at a memorial service in Lagos, Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), made a commitment that the children of FIRS senior staff who died in the Afriland Towers inferno will be automatically employed by FIRS. 

In addition, FIRS promises scholarships for those children. 

The affected staff include four senior officials of FIRS:

1. Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director)

2. Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director)

3. Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager)

4. Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager) 

The fire happened at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos on September 16, 2025, and at least ten people died in the incident. Among them were these four senior FIRS staff members. 

The fire reportedly started in the inverter room in the basement, and smoke spread rapidly through the building. 

There are calls for stronger safety protocols in high-rise office buildings in Lagos, to prevent future tragedies. 

Afriland Towers has been shut down indefinitely pending safety audits, reconstruction or repairs, and certification by relevant authorities before re-occupation.
