The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a new radio program aimed at enhancing tax education and sensitization across Nigeria. The initiative, named the “Tax File Radio Programme,” is designed to inform and educate Nigerians on tax-related matters, particularly targeting those at the grassroots level. The program will be broadcast across all six geopolitical zones of the country. The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, emphasized that the program seeks to simplify tax education and awareness, thereby encouraging voluntary compliance among taxpayers. He also highlighted the importance of using persuasive language to foster a positive attitude towards tax compliance, rather than employing commanding language that may discourage taxpayers.

This move aligns with FIRS’s broader strategy to deepen its sensitization efforts through various media channels. In addition to the radio program, FIRS has been actively engaging with educational institutions to instill the values of tax compliance and national development in students. For instance, FIRS organized awareness sessions at Anglican Girls Grammar School in Abuja, aiming to empower students as ambassadors of good governance and accountability. The sessions simplified complex taxation concepts and illustrated their real-life impact, such as funding schools, security, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Furthermore, FIRS has partnered with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide taxpayer education campaign. This campaign focuses on educating the public on the importance of taxes, how to pay them, where to pay, and why paying taxes is crucial for national development.

These initiatives reflect FIRS’s commitment to fostering a culture of tax compliance and civic responsibility among Nigerians, thereby contributing to the nation’s economic growth and development.
