The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has proposed a tax exemption on the personal income of military personnel in Nigeria. This decision was made during the consideration of four tax bills transmitted by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024. The committee chairman, Abiodun Faleke, stated that the exemption is due to the critical nature of military assignments.
This proposal is not unique to Nigeria, as some countries provide tax relief to military personnel. For example, in the United States, military personnel are exempt from state income tax in certain circumstances, and their spouses may also be eligible for tax exemptions. Additionally, the U.S. offers free tax preparation and filing services to military personnel and their families through the Military OneSource MilTax program.
