By Chukwudi Achife, Chief Press Secretary to the Tax Ombud
Stakeholders in Nigeria’s tax administration have expressed support for the Office of the Tax Ombud’s efforts to deepen trust, fairness, transparency and accountability in the country’s tax system.
The stakeholders’ position underscores the growing recognition that effective tax administration should not focus solely on revenue generation but must also protect taxpayers’ rights and provide accessible mechanisms for addressing grievances.
The Tax Ombud plays an important role in promoting a balanced relationship between taxpayers and tax authorities by receiving and addressing complaints arising from tax administration. Through its interventions, the office seeks to ensure that taxpayers are treated fairly and that tax authorities operate within the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance.
Stakeholders noted that building trust is critical to improving voluntary tax compliance. When taxpayers have confidence that their concerns will be heard and resolved fairly, they are more likely to comply with their tax obligations and participate positively in the tax system.
The drive to strengthen taxpayer confidence also comes at a time when Nigeria is implementing significant reforms aimed at modernising tax administration and improving the overall efficiency of the tax system. Such reforms require strong institutional frameworks that protect taxpayers while ensuring that government revenue objectives are achieved.
The Tax Ombud’s focus on taxpayer rights and effective complaint resolution therefore provides an important avenue for bridging the gap between taxpayers and tax authorities. It can also help identify recurring challenges within the tax administration process and encourage improvements in service delivery.
The stakeholders’ support reflects a shared understanding that sustainable revenue mobilisation depends on more than enforcement. It requires a tax administration system built on fairness, transparency, accountability and mutual trust.
As Nigeria continues to strengthen its tax administration framework, the Office of the Tax Ombud is expected to remain an important institution in promoting taxpayer confidence and ensuring that complaints are addressed appropriately.
Ultimately, deepening trust between taxpayers and tax authorities will be essential to building a more responsive, equitable and efficient tax system one that encourages voluntary compliance while safeguarding the legitimate rights of taxpayers.
