New Tax Ombud Promises End to Multiple Taxation in Nigeria

Nigeria’s newly appointed Tax Ombud has assured taxpayers and businesses that efforts are underway to address the long-standing challenge of multiple taxation across the country. The promise was made as part of broader reforms aimed at creating a fairer and more efficient tax system.

Speaking during a recent engagement, the Tax Ombud stated that the office was established to serve as an independent channel for resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities. According to the official, the goal is to ensure fairness, transparency, and relief for individuals and businesses facing tax-related challenges.

He noted that multiple taxation has remained a major concern for many businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, as they are often subjected to overlapping taxes and levies by different government agencies. He emphasized that the office would work closely with relevant authorities to eliminate such practices and improve compliance.

The Tax Ombud also called for stronger collaboration among federal and state revenue agencies, stressing that coordinated efforts are necessary to simplify tax administration and reduce unnecessary burdens on taxpayers.

Industry observers believe the development could improve investor confidence and encourage business growth if effectively implemented. Many stakeholders have long advocated for a streamlined tax structure that supports economic expansion while ensuring government revenue generation.

The establishment of the Tax Ombud is seen as a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing tax reform agenda, with expectations that it will enhance accountability and promote a more business-friendly environment.
