Nigeria’s tax administration is undergoing a significant transformation as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been restructured into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), a move aimed at strengthening the country’s revenue generation and management system.
Speaking on the development, tax expert Aderonke Atoyebi stated that the transition goes far beyond a simple change of name. According to her, the reform represents a strategic effort to improve the collection, administration, and management of taxes across the nation.
Atoyebi explained that one of the key benefits of the new structure is the expanded responsibility of the agency. Under the new system, the Nigeria Revenue Service will oversee all federal government revenues, including both tax and non-tax income. This broader mandate is expected to create a more coordinated and efficient approach to revenue generation.
She also noted that the reform will promote greater transparency in the tax system. By strengthening accountability and improving clarity in tax processes, the government hopes to enhance public confidence and ensure that collected revenues are properly managed.
In addition, the new structure is expected to foster better coordination among revenue-generating agencies. Through improved integration of operations and systems, authorities will be able to track revenue collections more effectively and reduce administrative gaps.
The reform also introduces a technology-driven system that will allow real-time digital monitoring of revenue. This innovation is expected to minimize leakages, improve compliance, and enhance the efficiency of tax administration nationwide.
Overall, Atoyebi emphasized that the creation of the Nigeria Revenue Service marks a major step toward modernizing Nigeria’s tax administration. The reform, she said, is designed to build a more efficient, transparent, and effective revenue system capable of supporting the country’s long-term economic growth and national development.
