The Nigerian Tax Act and the Nigerian Tax Administration Act are scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, despite objections from some members of the House of Representatives.
Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy & Tax Reforms Committee, reaffirmed that the implementation timeline will be upheld, and the reforms are intended to ease the tax burden and stimulate economic growth.
Oyedele noted that two related laws already took effect in June 2025, laying groundwork for full rollout next year.
Some members of the House raised alarms that the gazetted versions of the tax laws differ from what the National Assembly passed, prompting calls to suspend implementation.
In response, a House committee has been set up to investigate the alleged discrepancies between the gazetted copies and the versions approved by parliament.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for fresh legislative reconsideration of the tax laws, arguing that any changes after parliamentary approval undermine constitutional lawmaking processes.
Atiku said that without re-passage by the legislature and proper assent, the laws risk legal invalidity and could be challenged in court.
Despite the criticisms, President Bola Tinubu and the tax reform committee maintain the January 1 kickoff is necessary for economic objectives and remain open to working with the National Assembly on any remedial action.
