The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed that under the new Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), which takes effect from January 1, 2026, existing identification numbers will now serve as Tax Identification Numbers (Tax IDs).
Individuals
Your National Identification Number (NIN) automatically becomes your Tax ID no separate Tax Identification Number (TIN) needed.
Registered Businesses
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number will serve as the company’s Tax ID.
This unifies various tax identifiers previously issued by different agencies into a single, streamlined system to reduce duplication and simplify tax administration.
The reform aims to simplify tax compliance, close tax evasion loopholes, and ensure fairness in the tax system by linking tax identities directly to national identity records.
FIRS emphasized that this is not an entirely new requirement but a strengthening and consolidation of existing rules from earlier tax laws.
Despite earlier concerns, the government clarified that ordinary Nigerians who do not earn taxable income (e.g., students) may not need to obtain a Tax ID simply for opening bank accounts.
Reports that all bank account holders must have a Tax ID by January 2026 were contested, with authorities specifying it applies primarily to taxable persons.
