The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at streamlining tax payment processes across Nigeria. This initiative is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to modernize tax administration and enhance compliance.

Key Features of the Revised SOP

  1. Centralized Tax Remittance System: FIRS has introduced a centralized platform to simplify tax payments for state governments. This system allows state accountant generals to manage and remit taxes like Value Added Tax (VAT), Withholding Tax (WHT), and Stamp Duties efficiently, ensuring faster and more transparent collection processes .
  2. E-Invoicing Implementation: The agency is rolling out an electronic invoicing system, the FIRSMBS (Federal Inland Revenue Service Merchant Buyer Solution), to replace traditional paper invoices. This digital solution facilitates seamless creation, validation, and exchange of electronic invoices, aligning with international best practices and enhancing data visibility across supply chains .
  3. USSD Code for Tax Services: To improve accessibility, FIRS has launched a USSD code (*829#) that enables taxpayers to perform various tax-related activities without internet access. Services include retrieving Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN), verifying Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC), and accessing information on tax types and rates .
  4. Customer Service Optimization: A new Customer Service Optimisation Committee has been established to enhance taxpayer experience. This committee aims to review current practices, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes to streamline processes and boost service delivery .

These reforms are designed to create a more efficient, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly system, fostering greater compliance and contributing to Nigeria’s economic development.
