The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has attributed a significant portion of Nigeria’s revenue shortfall to poor data management and lack of accurate taxpayer information. According to officials, inadequate data integration across agencies, outdated records, and limited access to real-time economic activity hinder effective tax collection and compliance monitoring.

The FIRS has stressed the need for advanced data analytics, inter-agency data sharing, and digital infrastructure to close tax gaps and improve revenue generation. They believe that strengthening data governance could dramatically boost tax compliance and reduce leakages in the system.
